Complete Guide to Door Leaf, Rough Opening and Jamb Depth Coordination for Bulk Projects

Use separate measurements and a complete door-set scope so the supplier, site team and buyer are reviewing the same opening before quotation or production.

Direct answer

For a bulk project, record Rough Opening, Door Leaf Size, Finished Wall Thickness and Jamb Depth as separate fields. A nominal “door size” by itself is not enough to coordinate the frame, architrave, handing or hardware preparation.

Door project coordinator reviewing rough opening, door leaf and jamb depth information before quotation
Separate opening, leaf, wall-thickness and jamb information helps prevent door-set coordination errors before quotation.

Keep the four dimensions separate

FieldWhat it meansWhy the project needs it
Rough OpeningThe building opening reserved in the wall.Used to review the installed door-set interface.
Door Leaf SizeThe actual movable door panel width and height.Used for the leaf, clearances and hardware route.
Finished Wall ThicknessThe completed wall thickness after relevant finish layers.Used to coordinate frame coverage, jamb and trim.
Jamb / Frame DepthThe depth the frame must cover or match.Must be checked against the finished wall and approved scope.

Do not apply a generic “rough opening minus X” formula to every opening. The final relationship depends on the approved frame system, wall condition, clearances, threshold treatment and complete-set scope.

Use this coordination order before quotation

  1. Identify the Door ID, room or opening type and quantity.
  2. State the Rough Opening width and height with the unit.
  3. State the Finished Wall Thickness and any wall-finish condition that affects the jamb.
  4. Confirm whether the schedule gives a Door Leaf Size, Frame Outer Size or only a construction opening.
  5. Define single or double door, left or right hand, and inward or outward opening.
  6. Confirm leaf-only, frame, jamb, architrave, glass and hardware scope before comparing quotations.

Hardware and handing must be controlled separately

Handing and swing direction affect hinges, lock handing, closer preparation and installation sequencing. For project-specified locks, share the lock model and its available drawings, mortise dimensions or physical sample before machining is released. The final hardware route is reviewed against the selected door construction and leaf thickness.

What to send in a quote-ready Door Schedule

At minimum, include Door ID, quantity, Rough Opening width and height, Finished Wall Thickness, required jamb depth, single or double configuration, handing, opening direction, product series, glass requirement, finish reference, hardware model and destination port.

For a complete submission format, download the VISFURN Project Door Guide or review the Door Schedule quotation checklist.

Buyer questions

Is a 36 × 80 opening automatically a 36 × 80 door leaf?

No. The schedule must label whether the measurement is a rough opening, frame outer size or leaf size.

Can a buyer send only leaf sizes?

Leaf sizes are useful, but the finished wall thickness and frame or jamb requirement should also be reviewed before a full door set is quoted or released.

Which product pages help with the selection step?

Review Interior Doors, Wooden Doors and WPC Doors according to the room schedule and project conditions.

Send your schedule for a project-specific review

Send the opening schedule, wall thickness, finish reference, hardware details, quantity and destination port. The team will review any clarification needed before quotation.
