Wood Veneer Door Grain Matching: Book, Slip and Project Sets

A specification guide for importers, contractors, developers and hotel or apartment procurement teams deciding how visible wood-grain door surfaces should relate.

VISFURN procurement guide · 15 October 2026

Specify grain matching at two levels: within each door face and between the openings that need to relate. A book-matched face does not automatically give a coordinated pair or corridor. Identify the facing material, pattern direction, matching groups and approval reference before requesting a bulk quotation.

1. Identify the facing before specifying the pattern

“Walnut look” or “wood finish” describes an appearance, not the full surface specification. Ask whether the proposed facing is natural wood veneer, reconstituted veneer, printed PVC film, melamine or another material. Record the supplier’s actual product and finish reference in the door schedule.

Natural veneer can vary in grain and colour. A printed wood-grain surface instead needs an identified decor, pattern direction and agreed treatment of repeats and joints. Do not ask for natural-veneer matching on a film-faced door without clarifying the intended visual result.

Use the wooden door collection to discuss the selected construction and finish direction. A visible finish does not establish the core, fire resistance, sound reduction or external exposure suitability; those require a separate product and project review.

2. Separate face matching from project matching

The following terms describe different decisions. Include a marked elevation when words alone could be interpreted differently.

Veneer matching decisions to clarify in the RFQ
DecisionWhat it describesWhat to confirm
Book matchAlternate veneer leaves are turned to create a mirrored figure at adjoining edges.Approve the face layout. Alternating light reflection, often called barber pole, may be visible.
Slip matchSuccessive leaves retain the same face orientation; the figure repeats rather than mirroring at each joint.Review the grain direction and the appearance of the complete face, including any leaning figure.
Running, balanced or centre-balanced assemblyA separate choice concerning how veneer widths and joints are arranged across a face.Request a face elevation and the supplier’s definition. Do not infer the assembly from “book match”.
Pair or related-opening matchingThe requested visual relationship between distinct door leaves or openings.List the exact door marks and visible faces in each group; obtain confirmation of the offered matching scope.
Doors with adjacent panels or transomsA coordinated elevation involving more than the door leaf alone.Show all components, joints and grain directions. Continuous grain or blueprint matching must be explicitly reviewed.

These are specification terms, not a list of confirmed VISFURN options. Availability, the offered relationship between components and any effect on quotation or schedule must be confirmed for the selected construction.

3. Mark the groups that buyers will see together

Start with the project elevation or room plan. Give every opening a door mark, then identify which faces are visible together. A pair at one entrance, several doors along a corridor and a door integrated into wall panelling need different review scopes.

  • One door face: show grain direction, face layout and the finish reference.
  • Double doors: identify the left and right leaves, visible sides and the intended relationship at the meeting edges.
  • Related openings: assign a group reference and list the included door marks rather than writing “match all doors”.
  • Door plus frame or panel: identify whether the request is compatible colour, similar grain or a more controlled continuous arrangement.

For example, a buyer might mark two lobby leaves as group L01 and bedroom doors as independent faces using one approved finish direction. This is an illustrative planning choice, not a VISFURN delivered project or a guarantee that a particular match can be supplied.

If room assignments may change, resolve that before approving a location-dependent pattern. Carry agreed group and door references into the drawing, purchase order and packing instructions so the installer can place the intended components together.

4. Approve a finish range and a full-face layout

A small swatch can help choose colour and sheen, but it cannot show every joint across a complete leaf. Request an approval package appropriate to the actual order: identified material samples, a full-face layout, representative variation references and, where necessary, a related set or installed mock-up.

Review the proposed finish under useful daylight and the intended interior lighting. Agree what the retained reference covers: stain and sheen, the acceptable appearance range, face arrangement, or a particular group. Do not use one attractive screen photograph as an instruction for identical natural grain throughout a building.

Keep painted-colour control in the RAL/Pantone and door finish guide. Use the door sample approval checklist to record the covered door marks, revision, open issues and written release. Veneer layout approval does not approve unreviewed dimensions or hardware preparation.

5. Include phased deliveries and replacement expectations

Tell the supplier if the order will be split across buildings, floors or delivery phases. Identify whether any visual groups cross those boundaries. Ask what can be confirmed for the complete order and for a later repeat; do not assume that a finish name alone reserves material or reproduces a previous natural face.

Before adding replacements, send the original door mark, surface reference, available physical sample and photographs of the neighbouring doors. Obtain an explicit response about the achievable match and any new approval required. Agree how spares, if ordered, will be identified and stored for their intended locations.

6. Copy this brief into your quotation request

  • Project: application, destination, quantities by door type and required project dates.
  • Door construction: selected product, leaf dimensions, frame and architrave scope, wall thickness and hardware responsibility.
  • Surface: actual facing material, requested species or decor reference, cut or pattern direction where relevant, colour and sheen.
  • Matching scope: face layout plus the door marks, visible sides and other components in each related group.
  • Drawings: elevations showing grain arrows, joints, panel or transom interfaces and the current revision.
  • Approval: required samples, agreed appearance references, reviewer and production-release responsibility.
  • Delivery: phases, location labels, any spare-door request and expectations for later replacements.
  • Performance: specified standards and supporting documents required by the project reviewer, separately from the aesthetic approval.

If a decision is still provisional, identify it in the inquiry and ask which quotation assumptions depend on it. Keep the final production release pending until the affected scope is agreed.

Buyer questions

Does book matching mean all project doors will match?

No. Book matching describes the arrangement of veneer leaves within a face. Matching between door leaves, pairs, frames or nearby openings is a separate requirement that must be defined and confirmed.

Is a wood-grain PVC or melamine finish the same as natural veneer?

No. Identify the actual facing material before discussing grain matching. For a printed wood-grain surface, confirm the decor code, pattern direction, repeat and relationship between components rather than assuming natural-veneer terminology applies.

Can a small veneer sample approve the entire order?

It can establish a limited finish reference, but it does not by itself establish the arrangement across a full door or a related group. Agree which physical samples, elevations and variation references are needed for the specified scope.

Can a replacement door exactly reproduce an earlier natural veneer face?

Do not assume an exact repeat. Identify the original door mark and finish reference, provide photographs and retained samples where available, and ask the supplier to confirm the achievable relationship before ordering.

What should I send VISFURN for a veneer door inquiry?

Send the application, door marks, dimensions, quantities, facing and finish reference, grain direction, related-opening groups, frame and hardware scope, destination, project dates and any specified standards. Matching options and availability require confirmation for the selected product.

Wooden door project inquiry

Send the door schedule and finish elevation for review

Include quantities, dimensions, the actual facing reference, matching groups, frame and hardware scope, destination and project dates. VISFURN can review the submitted requirements with the selected wooden door configuration; matching options, supply scope and approval arrangements require confirmation in the project response.
