Door Vision Panel Specification for Hospitals & Schools

A buyer’s checklist for coordinating visibility, privacy, glazing dimensions and hardware before project doors are ordered.

Specify a door vision panel as a coordinated opening detail: its purpose, cutout position, glazing, retaining kit and surrounding hardware must agree. A photo or a single “window size” is not enough to release a hospital or school door for production.

Start with the room and the reason for visibility

A vision panel is a glazed opening within a door leaf. Hospital and school buyers may need it for corridor awareness, supervised observation or visibility before opening a door. Those uses can require different positions and privacy arrangements, even within the same building.

For a hospital project, identify patient rooms, treatment areas, staff rooms and circulation doors separately. For a school, distinguish classrooms, offices and corridor openings. Ask the responsible designer to define the necessary sightline and privacy requirements for each opening. Do not assume that one narrow rectangular panel works everywhere.

This guide supports procurement of hospital door systems and school doors. It does not establish a universal panel height, glazing thickness, fire rating or VISFURN product certification.

1. Separate four dimensions before comparing quotations

“Panel size” can mean the hole in the leaf, the glass pane or the area that remains visible after the retaining frame is fitted. These are not interchangeable. Manufacturer drawings also use model-specific order-size conventions; never carry a deduction from one kit into another.

Dimension fields to label on the approved door elevation
FieldMeaningBuyer check
Order sizeThe dimension used to order the selected vision kitAsk what the supplier means by width × height
Door cutoutThe opening prepared in the leafMatch the selected kit drawing and door construction
Glass sizeThe pane dimensions fitted inside the retaining systemConfirm size and thickness with the glazing supplier
Exposed glazingThe unobstructed glass area visible inside the retaining frameCheck the intended sightline, rather than the cutout alone

Also record the outside footprint of the retaining frame. A kit may fit its cutout yet conflict with a nearby lock or push plate. Keep units consistent and identify whether panel positions are measured from the finished floor, leaf bottom or another drawing datum.

2. Put the vision panel and hardware on the same drawing

Submit one elevation showing the leaf, panel, lock preparation, handle, closer, push plate and any protection plates. Mark the hinge side, viewing side and swing direction. On paired doors, identify the active leaf and state whether one or both leaves receive glazing.

  • Lock area: provide the actual lock model or preparation template, not only a handle photograph.
  • Top and edge margins: ask the door supplier to verify the proposed cutout against the chosen construction and any applicable assembly documentation.
  • Surface-mounted hardware: check mounting plates and fixing locations against the retaining frame footprint.
  • Repeated door types: keep a separate elevation when handing, panel position or hardware differs.

Use the door hardware preparation checklist to collect the hardware information before machining is agreed. A late kit substitution needs a new compatibility review, even when the nominal window dimensions look unchanged.

3. Describe privacy and cleaning requirements separately

“Privacy glass” is too broad for a purchase order. State whether the opening needs permanent obscuration, a clear observation zone or a controllable privacy arrangement. Identify who operates it and from which side. Ask the proposed supplier to confirm available configurations; a reference image does not establish availability.

Where observation matters, review the sightline from both sides with the responsible project team. Where privacy matters, review the intended room use and viewing angles. For healthcare openings, provide the cleaning method and agents for the supplier to check against the proposed glass, frame, seals and finish. Do not assume that a moisture-resistant leaf makes every associated component suitable for the same cleaning regime.

4. Keep performance evidence tied to the proposed assembly

List fire, impact-safety, acoustic, security or other project requirements separately. Ask for the relevant documents and configuration limits before accepting an alternative glazing system. A rating or label for one component does not establish the performance of a complete opening.

For a rated opening, the review must cover the proposed leaf, frame, glass, retaining system and hardware together. Changes to panel size, location or components need review against the applicable documentation and project approval process. Do not plan an unapproved site cutout into a rated door.

For non-rated openings, still confirm the specified glazing safety requirement, material compatibility and installation instructions. Use the project’s designated reviewer to resolve local requirements; this article is procurement guidance, not a compliance approval.

5. Make the supply boundary explicit

A quoted door with a vision opening may mean a prepared cutout only, a cutout with retaining kit, or a fully glazed leaf. Ask every bidder to state the same scope so the prices can be compared fairly.

Include or exclude each item in writing

  • Factory cutout and edge preparation
  • Retaining frame or beads, finish and fixings
  • Glass, glazing tape, seals and other required installation components
  • Factory glazing or installation by a named site party
  • Protective packing, identification labels and receiving checks
  • Shop drawings, applicable product documents and approval responsibility

If glass will be supplied separately, agree who issues the final pane dimensions and who checks compatibility. Keep the receiving and installation sequence aligned with that decision.

6. Send an opening-by-opening brief

For education projects, use the school entrance, classroom and corridor door comparison to separate opening uses before assigning a vision-panel detail. Keep exterior exposure, room privacy and circulation visibility as distinct requirements.

For bulk school or hospital orders, group identical configurations under a door type but retain each opening mark. A useful enquiry includes:

  1. Project location, building use, quantities and required delivery sequence.
  2. Door marks, leaf dimensions, frame or wall dimensions and dimension units.
  3. Panel shape, cutout and position shown on a dimensioned elevation.
  4. Required exposed glazing, privacy arrangement and specified performance.
  5. Hardware models or templates, handing and protection plates.
  6. Glazing supply and installation responsibilities, destination and project dates.

Record unresolved selections before quotation, and close them through the coordinated door submittal process before production release. Keep the approved drawing revision on the order so later substitutions can be checked against it.

Buyer questions

Is the vision panel size the same as the glass size?

Not necessarily. Order size, door cutout, glass size and exposed glazing can differ. Use the selected kit manufacturer’s drawing and confirm which dimension each schedule value represents.

Can we choose a vision panel from a reference photo?

A photo can communicate appearance, but production also needs the door elevation, dimension basis, panel position, glazing and kit details, hardware coordination and written approval.

Does a fire-rated glass panel make the whole door fire-rated?

No. A glass rating alone does not establish the rating of the complete door assembly. Request evidence applicable to the proposed door, frame, glazing, retaining system and hardware configuration.

What information should we send for a vision-panel door quotation?

Send opening marks, door types, quantities, leaf and frame dimensions, panel elevations, glazing and privacy requirements, hardware schedule, supply responsibilities, destination and project dates.

Hospital and school project enquiries

Send the door schedule and vision-panel elevation together.

Include quantities, dimensions, hardware, glazing and privacy requirements, destination, project dates and requested standards. VISFURN can review the requested door configuration and identify the information needed for quotation.
